HUMAN ERROR ASSESSMENTS

Self Coaching Center

"When human errors go down, your profits go up."

The Self Coaching Center was established to foster a training process called SELF COACHING.  Self Coaching is an individual skill based training process that can be measured.  This fact sets it apart from any other behavior safety or employee development program.  Self Coaching will assist employees in their efforts to eliminate accidents, injuries, and losses caused by human errors.

Self Coaching will improve communication, cooperation, and teamwork between and among employees and management.  The primary focus of the Self Coaching Process is for individuals to become involved, take personal responsibility, and reduce human errors.

The Self Coaching Center will provide trainers with experience and expertise in employee development and human error reduction techniques.  Employee involvement will be increased by teaching Self Coaching Skills that are specific, easily understood, measurable, and action-oriented.  When employees commit to practicing and using the skills, human errors will be reduced, and most importantly, employee health and safety will be preserved.

CBSS TRAINING
The Certified Behavior Safety Specialist (CBSS), a safety professional, was established a little over two years ago for the purpose of providing industry management with leaders capable of developing and managing effective behavior safety processes.  CBSS safety leaders are trained to provide a behavior process that consists of measurable behavior safety skills.  With these skills, employees are able to decrease human errors, thus reducing accidents, injuries and production losses that continue to plague industries and their workers.

CBSS candidates attend a three day training program.  In this training, participants receive training to:

  • Implement measurable behavior safety skills proven to reduce human errors.
  • Teach personal safety skills, tools, and techniques.
  • Coordinate an "in-house" Behavior Safety Process.
  • Assess "safe work behaviors and practices."
  • Enhance observation and feedback techniques.
  • Teach involvement, responsibility, and achievement -- the Self Coaching Excellence Code.
  • Encourage "active participation" and "involvement" to increase safety performance.
  • Provide expertise needed to create and maintain a behavior safety process.
  • Utilize tools and techniques to raise behavior safety to a higher prominence level in today's industrial setting.

THE CERTIFICATION:  The Self Coaching Center and the American Association for Industrial Behavior Safety (AAIBS -- A Non Profit Organization registered in California) collaborated to establish the certification process.  The Certified Behavior Safety Specialist is a registered certification through AAIBS.

Currently, CBSS is not recognized by National Certification Agencies.  With most national organizations, it takes years to reach their required maturity level and to match their standards.

The title or nomenclature of "Certified Behavior Safety Specialist" isn't widely recognized in the field of safety.  This leaves the burden of proof with individuals electing to become CBSS trained.  In order to grow, CBSS professionals need to prove that the concepts of the profession are real, possible, and achievable.  That can only be accomplished with and through individuals who are committed believers in the process.  To date, there are 40 (forty) CBSS Charter Members -- believers who are now leading and bringing behavior safety to new levels of prominence in their respective organizations.

With its origin, the focus for CBSS was on setting standards, rules and regulations for maintaining this new profession.  This was necessary, just as the rules and regulations for safety programs are necessary.  However, an organization in its infancy needs room to grow, and that has led to these new changes starting January 1, 2011:

  • As of January 1, 2011, and retroactive for all previous CBSS members, all certifications will be permanent.  There was a two year recertification process that required another fee.  This is now eliminated.
  • Instead of mandatory continuing education, all CBSS members will receive a monthly presentation from the Self Coaching Center that can be used in safety meetings, in company publications, or other means of educating employees.  The focus of these presentations will be on the Self Coaching Skills.
  • There will no longer be a final examination requirement.  Rather there will be a pre- and post-test evaluation as part of the training course.  This will provide participants with their own personal measure of accomplishment.  It will also provide them with direct feedback related to their strengths and limitations as related to training knowledge obtained.
  • The only requirement that remains for a CBSS candidate is to attend the three day training course.  In the event of emergencies prompting a candidate to miss class time, required readings and assignments will be made to assist the individual in completing the training.
  • All qualified CBSS candidates will be registered with AAIBS and receive a CBSS Certificate.
  • CBSS Certification authorizes a CBSS member to use any and all Self Coaching materials in the facility sponsoring the individual's training.

If you are not a CBSS member, you are invited to join this "band of brothers and sisters" recognized as safety professionals.  Currently, we are small in number, but our efforts are keeping the spirit of this new profession alive by making contributions to industrial safety.  Come join us on this journey.

Certified Behavior Safety Specialists (CBSS) bring to life the definitions associated with being a professional.
"Professional: a person who is expert at his or her work."
"Profession: the body of persons engaged in an occupation."
"Professionalism: the standing, practice, or methods of a professional."
"Professionalization: to give professional standards to a profession."

CBSSs are trained behavior safety experts and members of a new safety profession.  With CBSS training they are able to initiate state of the art behavior safety processes in companies.  These processes will contribute to the reduction of accidents and injuries, value employees, and increase productivity.

CBSS professionals will be instrumental leaders for managing effective behavior safety processes for industry.  The goal of this certification process is to establish the CBSS profession and to develop professionally trained individuals who can develop, present, evaluate, and maintain behavior safety in industrial settings.
